how to quit smoking?
i think it's best if you gradually decrease the number of cigs you smoke each day till you're at zero instead of going cold turkey. for instance, if you currently smoke 6 cigs a day, then cut it down to 5 a day and do that for a couple of weeks or until your body has adjusted and feel completely comfortable with it. then cut it down to 4, etc., until you're at 0.
yea, gradually cut down is the best way to quit. in the mean time try to picture how your life would be better without the evils that's been killing you. try not to eat too full...
or pick a new hobby to do when you crave cigarettes, like playing the guitar/piano, put your focus on something else.
im quitting smoking myself too, i know it's hard even though i know how much i hate having to pay to kill myself. work hard for your family, for yourself.

There are also prescription medications that can help you. You can read about them by researching Chantix or Zyban. Zyban is also an antidepressant while Chantix is solely for quitting smoking.
1st of all congratulations. You are saving yourself a million dollars over your lifetime.
2nd - Get yourself a Rx for Chantix. Cold turkey is doable but its really hard. You are going through true drug withdrawls. Chantix eliminates all withdrawl symptoms. So it makes it easy.
Btw, I am not a chantix sales rep, no affliation, yada yada yada.

PATCHES, PATCHES and PATCHES.
Old man was a smoker for 50+ years. Used patches. Still not smoking after easy 3 years.
Many argue no point at his age. I argue differently of course being his son

Short answer - No. Long Answer - Not known yet since the drug is new. However, I seriously doubt it.
Chantix is a Nicotine receptor antagonist. Basically its blocks the craving you get from nicotine withdrawl. No nicotine stimulation to the brain lead no craving, no "highs", no withdrawl which means that over time the cigarette tastes likes crap. So you just throw it away. I put my patients on it all the time, so far I have a 100% sucess rate(~60 patients). The only side effect is nausea.
If you really want to quit without meds then just put a $5 bill in your shirt pocket. Every time you try to light up you will remind yourself that you are burning away money. Pretty soon - the $5 bill will force you to reduce your drug habit.
Btw, an interesting tidbit about nicotine. A 1996(IIRC) study in an European journal showed that Nicotine was more addictive than cocaine. They gave 1 group of rats nicotine, and another group cocaine. The ones on cocaine were able to "give up" their habit quicker.
Another interesting fact : Smoking vs. Being rich. If you decided to not start smoking a pack per day and instead invested that money what would happen? $5 a day = $150/month or $1800/year. Put that into a mutual fund with 10% return and add $150 every month. You will end up with $956k in 40 years.
Its better than dying of cancer, or Heart disease or a stroke.
