Default How is "two week's notice" defined?

I'm going to submit my letter of resignation at my current employer soon and will be giving them them the standard 2-week notice. Is that usually considered exclusive or inclusive of the day I submit the notice?

For instance, let's say I resign on Monday 2/13/2006. Should my last day be Friday 2/24/2006? Or would it be Monday 2/27/2006?

Curious because I need to tell the new company when I can start. Thanks for any input.

It is not definitive. But if you submit on Monday, I'd assume your last day would be the second Friday.

Depending on what kind of work you do, they may walk you out right then and there, since you will be considered a security risk. Obviously, not if you are a boxboy at Wal*Mart, but if you develop software or something. Even if they walk you out, they will probably pay you for the next two weeks, sit by the pool and enjoy!

I would imagine they'd be fine if your last day was a Friday, that way you can start the next Monday at your new job if that's what you choose. If you have time, take a mini-vacation to decompress before you start anew.

Good luck!

It's funny you should ask that...I just quit a job recently. I handed them my nicely written letter of notice with the day's date at the top of the page. I just told them to consider my last day two weeks from the date of the letter. I don't think the specific date really matters, just that you inform them of a day you're going to stop coming in!

i agreee there are some places too that once you quit they let you go that day if you have any kind of authority to mess things up at there business. its usually just up to your boss. also, you could just tell them....."i am resigning, here is my letter of resignation and my last day will be ______ " and you call the shot

Yep. 10 days of work. Not 14 days time.
