Default I just received the marketing brochure for the Porsche Cayenne

The whole brochure is an attempt to link the SUV to porsche's performance history. They mention Porsches from the 356 to the new 911 Turbo. What a crock. Why don't they just come out and talk about the virtues of your normal SUV. Here are some lines from the brochure.

"Every new Porsche owes its soul to the one that came before." "Every new Porsche advances a bloodline". "The latest exhibit of a tradition that was born over 50 years ago in Porsche No. 1."

I'm just curious who actually ends up buying the Cayenne.

Side note: When my wife saw the envelope she asked me with an air of annoyance if I was in the market to buy another car.

I have seen what I recall to be pre-production models of the Cayenne (great name, Ferdinand... ) and it looked to me like a hopped up Boxster with bigger wheels and a big sort of hatch back. I recall it sharing a VERY similar front end to the 996 and Boxster. Is that how the production model looks, too?

I have real trouble with the direction Porsche has gone over the last several years...this is yet another reason why that is the case.

I'm sure it will be one helluva nice truck, but Porsche should have never thought they SHOULD have entered the SUV fray...and now, pretty late in the game, when every manufacturer makes at least 2 SUV's...I'd say the market is a little flooded. So now, Porsche gets to continue to sully their reputation with a truck that will be made to go into a flooded market...great marketing there, mein freund!

Greg

You never get to see the Cayenne in the brochure. There's one picture where there are three of them heading towards the camera but they are well disguised.

It actually makes sense to me that Porsche has entered this arena. How many of the other upscale manufacturers actually had high performace 4WD systems prior to their entry to this market? The 959 and the C4 led the way for Porsche and now the Turbo as well.

If I remember correctly the 959 won the Paris-Dakkar (sp?) rally.

I'm not thrilled about this - I would rather see a AWD wagon than an SUV. Something along the lines of the Audi RS4 - that thing rocks.

I received my Cayenne brochure quite some time ago. What a shame.
They weren't even able to come up with an unique design - they just put the 996 front end on every car they build.
I think I'll sell my 996 when my Ferrari arrives and won't buy a new Porsche until they adjust their attitude.
At least Ferrari won't built SUVs with Modena front ends .

A lot of people I've talked to about this think Porsche has lost its way.

I'm one of them .
You can exploit a brand name only so much.
The copycat design of the Boxster was a bad sign already.
They're going to burn well-built bridges.

I didn't register so didn't get to see the making of the design. Just not sure about this one until I see it on the road. BMW did a GREAT job on their X5, and Acura with the MDX. But Porche? Just not sure and I dont want to stick my foot in my mouth later. I really wish the Lambo LM004's and 5's woudl come back to life. Those were great!

Maybe they're just trying to keep things spicey .
And needed a hot SUV in the line up.
