I guess I should go buy whey protein at GNC.

another question.
I worked out triceps on monday but they are still sore after one full day of rest..should I still work out my triceps today(wednesday) even though they are sore or should I wait till they are ok? am I not supposed to work out when the muscles are sore or just keep going??
You can buy it at wal mart and it's just as good for a third of the cost. I've used both.

It will put muscle weight on you if you work out hard. I drink one a few minutes before working out and one immediately following. I mix it with skim milk. Chocolate taste best but the vanilla is good too.

Don't ever work your triceps out twice a week because you will over train them, plus when your doing chest and shoulders your actually hitting your triceps as well since some of the workout routines for chest/shoulders use the tricep muscle. Always make sure you spread out your workout routines so your not doing chest & shoulders one day after the other, for example if you do chest on monday, do either legs or back the next day which will allow your chest & triceps time to recover. If your feeling sore, it comes with the territory, take maybe some advil or ibuprophen before you workout. Let me know if you have any more questions.

1fast400.com works for me.

Order yourself 100% Whey Protein - Gold Standard. I got myself a 10# bag for ~ $87.

[QUOTE=clayzS2k,Jun 24 2008, 02:48 PM] drinking a protein shake is good but it's going to help build muscle and not necessarily put on mass. If your goal is to gain more weight or muscle mass, you need to look @ what you eat and eat more but split up your portions throughout the day, starting off w/6 small portions a day. It's great to take in a protein shake after you've hit the gym but also think about drinking one 45 minutes prior to working out as well. Since you are just beginning, just to let you know muscle milk is a caseine protein which is a slow protein, so it's best to take it @ night before you rest or in the morning, you need a good whey protein before and after workouts since it's a faster digesting protein and will break down a lot faster then your muscle milk.
If your looking to gain mass, remember that you need atleast 15 calories per pound of body weight (140lbx15g=2100 calories) you need just to sustain your current weight, depending on how long you workout you burn about 7 calories per minute, so if you work out for an hour that's 420 calories burned minus 2100 means your only taking in 1680, so you'll actually end up losing weight instead of putting anything on, so make sure your eating enough HEALTHY food containing good calories. Also take in atleast 1gram of protein per pound of body weight.

Bodybuilding.com

Go in there and READ READ READ!

Search for bulking diets, and for Rippetoes and Bill Starr (5x5) workouts.

Do those for 6 months and then thank me

And don't worry too much about supplements for now. They're mostly crap, and the good ones account for maybe 5% of your progress at the most. Eat clean, lift hard, and rest.

It is harder for a skinny man to gain weight than a fat man to lose it IMO.

Yes it will take lots of work to gain weight. It will become a chore to eat as much as you need. Protein and meal replacements are good but there is still no substitute for real food (red meat, potatoes, etc.)

Just stick with it. It takes 6 weeks just for your muscles to go through recruitment. Only after then will you see good results.

It is not uncommon to train triceps two times a week. We did for years. Google Westside Barbell Club and check out their workout. 4 days a week, 1 speed day and 1 heavy day for upper body and lower body.

Your tricep is 75% of the mass of your arm. If you want big arms, hit triceps hard. I recommend dumbell extensions very strict.

Your diet is going to be a major factor in adding weight. As mentioned before, eat small meals several times a day. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables as well and stay away from junk food as much as possible.

If your going the whey protein route, make sure to read the nutrition facts. Many of those supplements have high sodium and cholesterol levels.

Also, set a goal and track your results. For a person your size a pound or two a month should be realistic.

You need to eat more calories. Plain and simple. I was 6' and 150lbs at one point and put on about 25 lbs over a 4 month period. I was taking in around 4000+ calories a day along with heavy weight lifting. Protein shakes are great and weight gainer are your friend. Eat the more calories over 5-6 meals a day. Chicken, potatoes, tuna, eggs, spinach. Those are just a few things I ate everyday. As far as lifting weights go; squats, bench presses and dead lifts will add the most mass. I was at 202lbs, 6' at one point with a 10-11% body fat%. It takes time and patience so be prepared to hit road bumps and plateaus. Good luck.
