My wife and I are hooked on these Chinese dramas talking about the various Emperors and their officials during the Ching Dynasty. Most of these dudes (including the emperor) have concubines and stuff and it seems to have been practiced for many millenias until just the past 100 years or so. If the law permits, and say your financial ability permits, would you take on extra women in your household? No religious rebuttals please. As a male homo sapien, would you or would you not do so?

I voted "no". Unfortunately, I am probably led to this because of my upbringing (religion being a big part of it). If this was a norm for our society, maybe I would think differently, but I've always been a one woman man. Just to let you know, I've been single all my life and never dated more than one girl/woman at a time. However, I have dated some who were seeing other men at the time and I was not at all pleased about it.

back in the day, my religion said that any more than 7 women is excessive. 7 or less was ok though. I think I could dig it.

Too much like having people as property. I vote no.

Mingster, how is keeping a concubine any different from keeping a mistress? There are no laws against keeping mistresses and people do it all the time all over the world, in all cultures. The only difference I see here is that the #1 wife knows about the concubines, while the wife may or may not know about any mistresses. But from what I heard, most wifes of rich man (i.e., those who can afford to keep a concubine) usually don't care if their husbands cheat on them, as long their own supply of money is assured.

Maybe a parallel poll you can run for the women: If the law permits, and say your household financial ability permits, would you let your husband take on extra women?

I've got enough trouble with a wife, two daughters and an ex. Why would I want another woman?!

mingster - I had heard (through my white-american-irish-italian up bringing) that the chinese symbol for trouble was two women under one roof. Is that true?
