In an apartment building there is a high probability the shrapnel would go through walls ceilings to other apartments and cause collateral damage.

They would probably have used a flashbang if anything.

Peace is founded on the rule of LAW, which is incompatible with torture as punishment. I live in Berkeley, and it's sad to me that Oakland is so close and yet so far. Sure, some of Oakland's problems stem from anomie and systemic discrimination, but I don't buy it when people suggest that if only the police would stop patrolling the streets, everything would be just fine and dandy. Crime happens because it pays, and because the community tolerates it.

The juxtaposition of "Lovelle Mixon" and "hero" is a reprehensible perversion of the concept of heroism.

One who resists injustice without violence or terror is a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a hero. Lovelle Mixon wasn't standing up to the "man" when he shot at those officers. He wasn't representing a movement. He just wanted to stay out of jail, and not get caught for his heinous acts against society(it has come to light that he recently raped a 12 year old girl). That is selfishness; heroism is selfless.

For those of you wondering how it happened that the SWAT officers were killed, I believe that he was crouched in a closed closet and opened fire through the door when he heard the officers enter the room. Cowardice, distilled.
