I'm going to open a ING savings account
I use ING, so I dont have firsthand experience with Emigrant's interface but I have heard it can be difficult to use. The ING interface is great and easy to use.
ING's rate is currently 4% and there are rumors are of it going up soon.
Emigrants is currently 4.5%.
ING offers a bonus of 25 dollars if you get someone to refer you to an account. One thing some people have done is open an ING account then transfer the money to other banks to get higher interest while still getting the bonus.

capitalone offers 4.55% right now.. another one to consider. wmigrant and hsbc are at 4.8. I forget which, but theres another that offers $50 if you keep the money for 3 months . The way to go is get a referral to ING. collect that $25, transfer to the place for $50. After 3 months, take it out and stick it in the bank with the highest rate.. probably HSBC.
just keep in mind, you're not really getting 4.xx%.. after taxes. at 4.5% with your top income dollar being taxed in the 25% bracket (just an example), you will collect 3.375% on the money in your savings account after taxes.
I think its a very good idea to put a good amount of money away in savings accounts or CDs like these. Being that you can only contribute so much to your retirement per year, this is a good way to save risk free.

metlife has a semi-secret promotion running. You get $50 if you keep $5000 or more in your account for the first 3 months. So, stick 5k in metlife, $250 in ING with a referral for 30 days, then take it all and swap it to an emigrant direct account. $75 free for very little work
bump. i need to invest $5k. who is having signing bonus and the best interest rates? should i start with one company for the bonus then move my money to another?
emigrantdirect.com and hsbc.com are at 5.05% ayp.

That's enough interest paid to cover car insurance payments or your cell phone bills.
