I'm Shocked!
My wife called me from her car the other morning (disturbing a nice sleep-in) to report that she had just encountered road debris. Her nice little Acura CL had just lost its virginity, receiving several bad abrasions on the left front bumper according to her report after arriving at work. She was, needless to say, very upset.
My mission, the next day, was to make a trip to my local trusted body shop. The estimate was $467.00. I was surprised, because the damage looked fairly minor to me; but then, what do I know.
On the way home I passed a detail shop that I had been curious about, but had never investigated before. I did a u-turn, pulled in and inquired about whether or not the damage could perhaps be buffed out. I was somewhat encouraged by the fact that there were two late model Vettes on the lot being detailed.
It just so happened that the owner greeted me and listened to my tale of woe. He opined that he could probably remove 90% of the scratches while I waited. Subsequent to buffing the area with some polish, he admitted he was wrong. He had removed 100% of the scratches for $25, which he acted a little embarrassed to take..
I look forward to getting my S detailed soon. He charges $50 for a hand wash and wax and $99.00 for a complete detail, inside and out.

thats why you should go to difference shops to get opinions.. some shops are just straight fraud and only out to rip people off.
i am glad you made a good choice and not get ripped off by the first place you went to.

The body shop was quoting cost to repaint, and that's about right for a high quality shop. Did you ask the body shop if it could be buffed out?
Anytime you are asking for a quote on something, what you ask for greatly determines the answer you get. Sometimes you get useful feedback and sometimes you don't, depending on the person, level of distraction, stress, etc.
But, as said...always get more than one opinion, in the very least you will confirm a good price, at best you learn something new

Indeed, sounds like a good business merchant doing their every bit for their customers ... I like to hear such good deeds everyday, especially when the automotive industry can sometimes be very screwed-up.
