I'm thinking of getting... dare I say it... a Mac! eek!

MrForgetable, I know you're a die-hard mac person, but I find it hilarious that you point out Apple's lack of speed improvements over time as a good thing. Yes, an apple computer from several years back is not much slower than one you can buy new today, but I fail to see how that is a good thing. The G5 came out a full year ago and they have failed to increase the processor speed one bit, so yes I will agree that a year old G5 would be worth more than a year old Intel or AMD machine though that is because you can buy a faster windows machine today than you could a year ago.

Macs aren't bad, but I've had no problems with XP. If someone is having that many problems with XP they must have done something to screw it up. My roommate's Mac has had way more problems in the last year than my Windows PC. I had always believed the propaganda that Macs were bulletproof until I got a roommate with a Mac.

I want to go all out and run a Linux computer, but I will have friends come over and need to use it (they are morons and I am very generous), as well as will have a need (a want really) for some Windows based applications.
So if I do get a Mac (most likely not but I HATE WINDOWS) I will also build a nice PC with either a Linux parition or a seperate linux hard drive.

Well OSX is based on a Linux distro.

Funny how you are using WindowsME and it's problem free, it's the OS that has the most problems. I guess some are just lucky.

No, OS X is BSD with a Mach kernel, which is most certainly not linux. It is not based on linux, a linux distro, or anything remotely linux. It is possible (with a little work) to run linux apps under OSX, much as you can run linux apps under most any BSD, but it isn't linux at all.

I got my wife an iMac and iPod 2 years ago this month.
Its has been great. No virus problems, its been great for her music, photos and online shopping.
For people who do nothing but that stuff....its a great machine. My dad purchased the 499$ dell last week. OMG what a pile of crap, full of "free" trial software and it was constantly crashing. Hes going to return it and get a mac.
