Indiana
During the summer after my freshman year in college I sold books door-to-door through 3 counties (I know one was brown country, I sold in the cities of Jasper, Columbus, and in one county that was the lowest or 2nd lowest income county in the state, can't believe I forgot the name of it, it was the butt of about 3,000 jokes). I mean I talked to about 80% of the households that lived in each county by the time I moved on.
Indiana has some good roads. Most of the people are nice, and also fairly trashy. The average amount of rusting cars per yard was more than two. I spoke with the ex grand wizard of the KKK, saw several people go to jail, and came upon more than one meth lab in my travels.
People think Texas is "the south", but Texas is practically Maine compared to Indiana. Most barns in the rural areas had at least one sided painted the confederate flag with at least one truck on the gravel driveway with a confederate flag displayed on it somewhere.
I wish I could remember the name of the town where I spoke with the ex wizard of the KKK. His nosy ass neighbor told me all about him after I talked to him and that he and the "bosses" have an unspoken rule that black people can't come outside after dark.
Yes, this was in the year 2004. Indiana. What can I say?
