I think only of it's sleek body and ease of use with the click wheel and the very well planned out interface. Plus all the cool people have it so everyone's getting into it.

Plus they fiit 4 gigs/20 gigs/40gigs/60 gigs in a relatively small package compared to the other one's on the market. my iPod is actually probably just a little bit bigger (but much thinner) than a minidisc player, which holds about one CD worth of songs. I went to play with the small Dell ones, and they aren't bad either. Creative has a nice one too, maybe a little bit big.

Yeah I have a 20gb iPod, and I like it a lot. For sure it's not the smallest thing in the world, but it holds quite a lot, and with the extra space I use it as my external harddrive to transfer pictures/music/documents too. Yes, you look at some MP3 players out there and say hey this one costs only 200 dollars. Yeah it's small. But it's too small. The buttons are tiny, you probably only get 128mb-256mb of memory, and the screen is just this small thing that displays what track number it is or some other random thing. The iPod has a nice screen that displays most of the necessary information. Plus it's fun to scroll through the songs

Creative requires you to install software to use it on any computer...which sucks big time in my opinion. Does Apple make you do that?

i think you do need software. it works best with iTunes, but there are other programs like EphPod that connect with the iPod also.

i use a mac so I'm not sure how it works with windows but the iPod comes with a "iPod software CD".

popping in the CD will install iTunes (or it might not, but it is available for download at www.apple.com/itunes) and probably just install some necessary things to transfer. Then when you pop it in, the unformatted harddrive will just change the format to FAT32 and it'll work.

You could also try to get one through a student discount if you know someone. At my school there is a promo at the moment -- buy a power book and you get an iPod mini for $30.

I could hook someone up if they want it.

About that software thing. You can't just plug in the Creative product and add files to it...you have to go through Nomad Explorer, Creative's software.
Not what I expected.
