Job offers: College -->Where Do I Go From Here?
I've narrowed it down to two offers. One is with a global telecom company, the other is with a multinational management consulting firm.
It seems that many of you on this board have your shit together. I mean, look at your taste in cars. That tells me right away you guys know what you are doing. So outside of seeking advice from my inner-circle of successful business friends, I'd like to get some of your input.
My heart's with the consulting firm. The people are more my type: want to work hard, yet party hard and drive BMWs and make a lot of money. Management consulting will give me a broad view of the business world and with their resources, the firm invests a lot of money into training. Their name carries a lot of weight.
The telecom is more of a techie job. While I am not interested in learning how to set up networks, the amount of skills they will provide will give me a speciality whereas the management consulting will give me a "jack of all trades" persepective. I've interned at this company so I know the people. Great, but the scene is older and less Alley McBealish (which is not a bad thing for me).
The salary is about the same. What's more important to me right now is which job will set me up for a better future? Which job will be more attractive to future employers?
Bottomline: Which job will help me get the Ferrari F60 sooner?
When you respond, could you please give me a quick summary of your careers?

tough call. I think telecom. consulting is a hard route. I assume you are in business as opposed to eng or comp sci. I personally think that the best package you could possibly ask for is a science degree and an MBA. Those are the guys that get rich, very rich.
Go with your heart. The job you will be most sucesfull in is the one you love. The money, cars are all second to being happy. Believe me you can have a great job you love and still make lots of money...I still wish I became a rock star but what ca ya do?
Also one important rule I always live by, "It's who you know" the right connections can get you exactly where you want to be. Make friends with everybody. Put yourself in situations where you meet with people in diverse backgrounds. Your looking at 2 fine jobs but always be looking 2 steps ahead. Fcvk Microsofts " where do you want to be today" crap. Where do you want to be when your 30. Find away, but make sure you always do what's right for you.
I'm sure some might disagree, but for me personally. I had a job that paid me 145k a year. I was miserable. Now I make 95k a year (not chump change
)work about 30 hours a week and love what I do. To me this is sucess. Spending time with my family, and still have my toys.
Hope this helps!

I just graduated about a year ago and do mainframe programming for a huge company. I think that if you do what you have a passion for then money will follow. If you don't like your work all that much then forget it unless you are extremely disiplined. You can always learn something else later. Chances are no matter what you do now you will not be doing it when you retire.
Sorry I missed your last line.
Im 27, been in sales all my life ( Herb Tarlek)
The beauty of sales is that you're bacsically your own boss. You let the numbers speak for themselves. Nobody ever questions me when I roll out of bed at 10am or if I'm on the 9th tee. But it's not for every one. It's harder then I make it look

I also agree, you should find something you enjoy. Do it better than anyone else and the benefits will follow. I found my calling in Management. Nothing I love more than chewing out some vendor (sorry no flames please) for not doing the job. Conversely, I'll stand on my soapbox and sing praises if it's done per my specifications. My management philosophy: You have two choices. Make one. I'll either commend or chastise, but either way you'll learn and be a better leader for it.

If you gets a bit lazy to stop advancing yourself while being a consultant, you will end up with absolutely no useful skill.
On the other hand, if you think you can keep up, you should have a good busy career as jack of all trades
Were you the type of person who took it easy in freshman year or overload yourself with 22 credits?

Pig,
I think the name of the firm will carry me even if I am without skills. But I think you need to know a little more about the Big Five consulting firms to judge whether they train you with skills or not. They actually spend a lot of money for training that you want your career to go in.
