Job Related Issue.
You should be upset because going behind your back and slandering you was cowardly. Unfortunately, these are the games we must play in the workplace. Happens everywhere. How did you find out about it?
Depending on the guy's demeanor, I'd ask (not confront) him why he feels this way about you and chose to act on it the way he did. Be polite but don't hold your tail between your legs. Show him you're the bigger man and he'll feel the like fool he is. Then again, sometimes speaking up can make things worse, especially when dealing with higher ranking employees. Hard to give advice without knowing more about your company, position, and bosses.
