Can he just buy the car at the end of lease? Am I missing something?

The dealership is going to force him to buy the car or sue his ass or something. They will not take delivery of that car.
This might/will save him financially.

I never understood people that modify a leased vehicle. it will eventually have to go back to the dealership unless you plan on buying the car in which you should have done in the first place.

^technically he didn't own it. could he sell it? I remember when I broke lease on my first S2000, Honda's policy was pretty loose. i believe they said something to the effect of "you owe us xx,xxx, we don't care how you get us the money" - in a nice way. but I'm not sure what Infiniti would do. Could you imagine the email chain running the corp offices at Infiniti - ppl would be falling out of their chairs laughing.

Why not keep it fully modified, get a loan, buy it for whatever is owed, then immediately turn around and sell it? Ideally you can pay off the loan and have money to pocket.

That's contingent on the market to buy it. . .
