laptop processor question
can someone please explain and differentiate between the pentium m and pentium 4 processors for laptops?? i've noticed that pentium m speeds are in the 1.x range where as the pentium 4 speeds are in the 2.x-3.x range. how do the 2 compared with each other in performance, and what are some of the strengths and weaknesses of each??
get the pentium m. easier on batteries and cooler almost same performance

i currently have a pentium 4 2.0 laptop and i was thinking of trading it for my brother's pentium m 1.6 plus paying him another couple hundred dollars. assuming all else are equal, which would be the better laptop??
actually, i'm a bit confused with the chart. is there a difference between the pentium m and the pentium 4 m?? cuz in the chart, the m 1.3 outperforms the 4m 1.7...

^as u can see it is not the same performance.
a 1.7m got spanked by a 3.0 normal p4
the m processors are much nicer on the battery and has a bigger cache. 2mb exactly....
but if ur a powerhog.. get the p4 3.0ghz or else ur gonna regret it.

The fastest performing laptop I have used so far is an IBM 2.1GHZ Mobile Pentium (765 processor). It smokes mobile P4 3GHZ. The IBM smokes my 2.8GHZ desktop. The new Pentium M chip when matched with the right chipset not only gives you better battery life it performs faster than higher speed chips. This is running SQL Server and the world's largest VB application (over 6 million lines of code at last count) and all of those machines have 2GB RAM, 128MB Video Cards and the laptops are running 7200rpm drives. None of them hold a candle to my Dual Xeon desktop but that is to be expected with 4GB RAM and 15,000 RPM SCSi drives in a RAID0.
