This is a good tip for those who are comfortable with this sort of thing. I've bought a lot of RAM from Crucial and have been very happy.

I would recommend the Dell 8200. I bought the 8100 a year ago with 866 mhz, 16 meg gforce2, 15inch Ultra, 256 megs, 20 gig, cd-rom. Even though I regret not going completely all out on processor and harddrive space it's still came out only $1900 before tax and shipping (TX). I was able to do photoshop, dreamweaver, ftp server, Counter-Strike with 80 fps. My family has gone with Dell for 5 years, great customer service, warranty and specially the price. Second choice would be a Toshiba, since they're light.

I had an IBM 600e, not the fastest, but it was stable. Build quality and feel was excellent. It was also super quite. I was looking for another Thinkpad, until I fixed my desktop. Then I got a new job and along came a Dell Latitude c840 with 15", 512 at 1.6p4, and a cdr. I suppose it is fine, although I don't like the keyboard or the weight. It is also loud, twin fans, the battery whined one night when I left it in suspend. My friend had a hp for a while, but he had problems and the HD was very noisy. I would go for an IBM in an instant.

Dell Latitude (X200 or C400 are sweet) or Thinkpad T23 or T30... they're great laptops. IBM has great tech support: very fast getting your parts back to you.

i ended up getting this Toshiba last night http://shop2.outpost.com/product/3347982/

i like the looks of the dell.. but even though i design e-commerce websites.. i still have issue w/ making large purchases on something and tangably see, touch, play on before buying

this thing is awesome though! 2.2ghz.. i bought Army of Darkness(Action/Comedy) DVD to try it out.. its freakin sweet! 16' monotor.. wireless keyboard n' mouse.. TV out so it hooks right up to the 54" big screen

Thinkpads are OK, but unless IBM has changed their service levels within the last couple of years, I wouldn't use them. All we used to buy were IBMs. I and many others here at my company have been burned too many times in the past by IBM. The only way to get any decent response times was though ESS support and even then I had to go to the manager of the technician for BS IBM policies way too many times.

I purchase about $150,000 a year through Dell for about the past 3-4 years. I've been happy with them. Service is great. Just had a hard drive die yesterday.....already got a new one in this morning.

I've also used some of the the Gateway, Toshiba, Compaq, and Sony laptops.

I have also bought a lot of RAM through Crucial. Very fast delivery, no major problems, and automatic 10% off.
