Thumbs up Last Resort letter

Royal Navy nuclear submarine

[SIZE=7][QUOTE]Why the recurrence of the image of some valuable truth hidden in an inaccessible safe? My theory is that it allows us to believe that certain truths do exist: They're just forever locked away from our grasp. A thought both comforting and disturbing.
In the case of the Letter of Last Resort, the reference turns out to be factual: At this very moment, miles beneath the surface of the ocean, there is a British nuclear submarine carrying powerful ICBMs (nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles). In the control room of the sub, the Daily Mail reports, "there is a safe attached to a control room floor. Inside that, there is an inner safe. And inside that sits a letter. It is addressed to the submarine commander and it is from the Prime Minister. In that letter, Gordon Brown conveys the most awesome decision of his political career ... and none of us is ever likely to know what he decided."

Indeed the Letter of Last Resort foregrounds, personalizes

If they've got 1, that means we have 10 floating around.
The US has 18 Ohio class nuclear powered missile submarines, 14 with up to 24 Trident II ICBMs each and 4 with Tomahawk cruise missiles.

I know what mine would say:

"Use your Giger counters to find the "cleanest spot" to dock and try to repopulate the planet."

we have enough bombs on the surface to kill the whole world several times over. If England is part of some atomic war, the subs on patrol would not make any difference. Send them to the safest place and hope they have a good enough mix of male and female crew to continue the species.

I mean seriously if that safe has to be opened.... its already over.

Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face?
