The Leonids were spectacular.

Default The Leonids were spectacular.

The nearly full moon washed out the sky, so we didn't see 2,500+ per hour, but, from Vasquez Rocks we saw probably 500 in two hours, some of which were incredibly bright and had very long tails.

It was cloudy and rainy here, so I couldn't see them if I wanted to. A few years ago, there was a special show that only comes every 80 years or so (not Leonids) and I got up early on a Sunday morning just to go out and see them. I was very impressed.

I tripped over myself at 2am and saw stars around my head. Other than that SF was cloudy

I saw them from Jashua Tree last year, but couldn't get out there this year. I tried looking from my house, but the moon was just way too bright. The show was really good last year, but I heard this year was suppose to be better. Glad you had a good time George. Bet you're paying for it today, for staying up so late.

We relaxed in our lounge chairs in the back yard from 2:30 to 3:30 and saw quite a show!! I can just imagine what it was like away from the city lights!!

Mark-

We went to bed at 8 and got up at 1 -- and drank lots of strong coffee when we got there. Only moderately wiped out yesterday.

The problem with Vasquez Rocks, which is just north of the 14 about halfway between the 5 and Palmdale, was a bunch of drunken fools running around making a lot of noise. We got under a big tree in moonshade and sat on folding chairs kind of away from everyone else. I did have to tell a few people to shut the up.

It was very cool. We went out to see it at around 12:30 am - 1:30am. Not at the peak for us in So Cal but we did get to see alot of it.

Like I said in the other thread (I think), depending on whose computer model you believe, if the moon hadn't interfered, 2,600-3,500 meteors per hour would have been visible from a dark location. The last time that happened was in the early 1900s and everyone thought it was the end of the world.
