Default Looking for a digital camera...which one?

Fellow players of the digital realm, I am looking for a good digital camera. I've tried the SOny psc-50. While its a nice looking unit loaded with technical goodies, it took crappy indoor pics, especially under fluorescent lighting. In addition, it was quite temperamental under "less than perfect" lighting conditions, indoor and outdoor. That, plus the fact that it ate batteries like crazy and the flash took 10 seconds to recharge (YEs, it literally took THAT long), made it not worth the $400 list price. So, I returned it and am looking for another one. Any ideas? I know many of you use digital cameras extensively. I am looking for the following requirements:

2.1 megapix or greater
self timer
2x OPTICAL zoom or greater (don't care about digital zoom)
good build/construction
video out (to hook up to a TV)

That's about it. Thanks for you input.

Interesting subject.

I'm a die-hard 35mm SLR photographer who has become very comfortable with my film developer scanning the film originals and putting them on disc.

Cedic uses a Nikon CoolPix which puts him in the professional relm and you may or may maynot be looking for that same extremely high quality, but Nikon clearly is an industry leader!

I have no suggestions other than the Kodak DX 3700. Enlargements up to 11x14", 3X zoom, 3.1 megapixels, 8MB memory and the EasyShare docking/charging port.

Good luck in your choice. Be sure to check out all the features based upon your picture taking needs. Ironcally enough my needs are automotive and I have tried too many amateaur digital platforms that were too damn slow in geting the shot off. AutoX events where the car has traveled outside the picture frame by the time the silly digital camera got its crap together to snap the shutter is way too frustrating for me.

I love my Canon EOS Elan SLR!

Get any Sony one, those are all great.

I have a Canon S20 and it doesn't meet up to the standards I thought it would. Sucks for night vision, shutter is really slow but I did get it at a good price for a 3.34 megapixel digi cam.

I don' know if your willing to drop this much on a digital camera but i just got the Sony DCR-PC110 last week and its works very nicely. I brought it to the Larry hopkins event in california last saturday and too quite a few pics. Its a great camera but the price is a little iffy.

When I was looking for my digital camera, I found this site...
http://www.steves-digicams.com/
By far the most comprehensive, unbiased, and informative site for digital camera info and reviews. Even includes several full resolution sample pictures taken with each camera. Check it out.

BTW, all the pics I have posted in the last month have been taken with a Canon Digital Elph S110.

When you're figuring out the cost for your camera, make sure to include a second battery and a larger memory device. You're gonna need both.

Another good site: http://www.dpreview.com/

I went into a store once to pick up a Digital Elph, and walked out with a Nikon 35mm SLR. Until the digital SLRs come down in price and I can use my lenses, I won't be getting a digital camera.

thanks for all the advice guys. I am looking for simplicity and basically just quick snapshot type stuff. One of the benefits I hope to gain from digital camera is the fact that you don't have toworry about wasting film. YOu can just snap away at everything and anything and then go through later and delete the stuff you don't want. Those are basically my needs in a digi cam. However, I want one that will give "true" image. I read that some cameras don't reproduce the colors as well as they should....
