You can clearly hear some kind of rattling. When I went for a test drive, I thought it sounded like an angry chainsaw. I hope it's not by design! I did like the smoke out of the exhaust. Very cool, like a pair of smoking barrels.

That's what I was thinking, there's that rattle. My BMW salesman said they were convinced the sound was a problem when the car first came in but the service department swore up and down that it was a know characteristic of the car. Kind of a $hitty sound for a $50,000+ car.

I went to look at the new M3 a while back and the salesman gooses it while it's sitting there and I winced because there was no WAY it was supposed to sound like that! It had this rattling buzzing sound...truly aweful noise to it! I was thinking it was broken, but then the salesman says that it how is was SUPPOSED to sound...I was floored.

Cool car otherwise, for the most part... (sorry Loki, you know my feelings)

I'll let you know... a friend at work will be picking his Silver/Black M3 on the 18th (arrives in port on the 10th of this week). Trust me, I'll take lots of photos and movies!

I test drove one a couple of weekes ago and it sure as hell doesnt sound like that inside.

You are isolated from exterior noise in the car although you do hear a low burble when flooring it.

Its a beast though very very fast, the gearbox is pathetic its throws are so long it feels like shifting a tractor trailer.

I also found the steering wheel to be too fat for my hands.

I hope you're right and it's been fixed, but so many people have reported hearing this that it doesn't sound like isolated instances. Also in my case, it clearly happened at the 'vtec' changeover around 5000-5500rpm. Below that it sounded normal. Pretty bad for *any* car, not to mention a brand new $50k+ car. And I haven't seen a single review that mentions it....
