and his lawyer requested a 12yr sentence, it'll take longer then 12 years just for one of the families to save back what he took from them.

It's the subtlety of it. If you said, life in prison, he would say ok I'm here to die. If you say, 150 years, he thinks, well gee I wonder how many more year I have in me? 2? 5? 10?

I would imagine he is going to get killed or at least abused in prison. He might hang himself, in which case he'd at least die with honor.
