Not to downplay this unfortunate severe rain storm that occurred, but having lived in southern Louisiana most of my life we frequently see 5" or more inches of rain in 24 hours.
Last year during hurricane Isaac, we had over 20" in about 36 hours and a few years back during hurricane Allison we have almost 30" in 24 hours.
