Most fun driving experience ever in Ha Noi
What's your most enjoyable driving experience ever?
Well for me it would have to be the two weeks I just spent in Hanoi and the northern provinces of VN along Highway 4. I rode a Minsk - a lot of fun in a loud, dirty, and cheap little package. In the city the Viets have no regard for fellow motorcyclists, pedestrians, or their own lives. About 80-90% of the traffic is bikes. Out in the countryside people are incredibly friendly, especially if you know a little of the language, and the food is awesome. If you feel like picking up a few young Tay or Hmong wives along the way you can do that too. They have been paving roads like crazy in the north so it's possible to ride trails or the mountain highways depending on your preference.
Awesome riding and some crazy fun in the cities - it made coming home to the WRX a big let down.

Yes, that's true... 11:15 at night and the streets were seething with teenagers, but by the stroke of 12 they had all vanished! Nevertheless there were plenty of bars open late, catering to westerners and viet khieu.
did you get to go into the city? Ho Chi Minh? it's definitely changed in past couple of years, still 3rd world but a bit more modernized
How about Dai Lat? the mountains are nice

That's funny because I always saw it as viet kieu growing up, but the school we stayed with told us it's actually more correct to use the 'h'. It doesn't really matter that much to me, they could have been messing with us and I'd never know.
We didn't get down to HCMC, but we did see Hue on a side mission. We were mostly touring the northern mountain parts from Lao Cai to Lang Son provinces, with some visits to the CN border. The nicest part of the ride was Hwy 4A from Cao Bang to Lang Son. The whole trip cost less than $300, including some nights at nice hotels with alcohol and um, entertainment.
