my puppy broke her leg :(
A few weeks ago she was running like crazy and then limped back home. We have a huge yard so we have some small rabbits always hangin out and my cocker spaniel loves to play with them and chase them all over. Well i took her to the Vet and they said rest her for a few days whichi I did and she got better probably pulled a muscle. Well it happened a second time and doc said same thing. Pills rest etc. Shes pretty wild and love to run so its hard to control her sometimes. Well the other day it happened again and this time it looked more serious
She wouldnt eat or drink and just looked sad. I had some family take her this time when I was at work today and I hear some bad news about it being kind of serious. It looked like it was dislocated and then it just got worse an dnow is broken. Gonna require surgey.....Price is 1500-2k but shes my dog so I dont care. Has anyone else had a pet with a leg problem or broken bone? Its her back leg. I'll get an update later today since she being xrayed some more. I just got bits of news today on her condition so its driving me crazy. Do dogs recover fully like humans??

Man, that really sucks. Hope your dog gets better.
I have a 9 year old Mini Schnauzer, and she still acts like she's still a puppy. She got loose once while staying with family while we were on vacation, and spent the night roaming around. Anyway, she ate something bad and it really messed up her liver. We ended up spending about the same amount getting her fixed up, which may sound like a lot, but she's just like family.

my housemates are idiots(hence me moving this month) but never the less, about three months ago one of my housemates buddys was drunk and swinging a 8 iron in the backyard and our begal was running around at the same time. Regretfully lisa(our begal) ran into the club's path and broke her knee-cap. It took a month and a half but no she is walking with no limp anymore. It did take some time, and the meds were fairly spendy

We have a little pomeranian that is about 5 months old and she broke her leg. Its the front one though. One thing I have since learned is that this is fairly common in little dogs due to poor circulation to their extremities.
Our vet has also recommended surgery @ 1.5-2K. The information I have says surgery is the way to go also. They put a plate across the break (or in our case breaks) and screw it in to place.
Pro's:
-high chance of proper healing
Con's:
-bone could possibly not heal back to full strength because of the support of the plate.
I've read that in an idea situation a plate would be surgically placed until the break healed and then surgically removed. Our vet has not mentioned removing the plate though.
Wishing your dog a full recovery.

Are you sure it is not hip displasia instead of a broken leg? Either way it is not cheap but I would fix it.
If it cost $10,000 to fix my dog's leg, I would pay it. He is 8 and so who knows how many years he has left but dogs are the greatest most loyal friends you will ever have. I would not blink before returning the same loyalty to my dog. Chewbacca is worth it, even if he is a total spoiled pain in the butt.
Good luck, but if it is a puppy, you will feel the pain initially, but after a while, you will be so glad you did.

Sorry to hear that
I have friends who spent 20k on their dog when he got sick. It's a tough thing. I'd spend 1-2 k on my dog in the same situation because I love that crazy beast.
I hope whatever happens you and the dog are okay.

Hi ppl, though i should shed some light on this topic since i'm a Licensed Veterinary Technician
How is your dog doing now SilverKnight? It's very common for dogs to have knee injuries, just like people do. It's common for active medium sized and large dogs to have acl ruptures, like human athletes. If that turns out to be the case. The procedure is basically similar to humans. gonna take some time and physical thearpy for a month or two afterwards, but full recovery is expected. Usually it requires a certified surgeon to perform the surgery. So make sure to ask you vet who will be performing the surgery. 1500-2k like you stated is about how much it will cost just for the surgeon. But will probably cost more after everything is said and done. I hope everything turns out well, and let us know how she is recovering.
and dkhl, i seen a lot of pt with the same signs you had described for your dog that turned out to be a patellar luxation. the next time your dog does that or when you're at the vet, have the vet check the knee cap specifically. certain breeds of small dogs don't have very good ligaments to hold the knee cap in place and sometimes it shifts when they start running around. Most of the time surgery isn't necessary unless it becomes too painful for the dog. Just pop it back in place and time out for a few days. get some glucosamine, same stuff for people, to help build up some cartilage. give half a pill or so everyday or every othere day, can't go wrong with it. you can get it at gnc or even costco.
Well good luck to you guys and hope you pets are healthy and safe.
