My toy that we designed finally arrives!
I finally (After 6 months!!) gotten the final production pieces for our toy, Kuggs. The factory that we are working with has so far only sent me pics. This will be the first time I seen or touch them in real life. Anyway I filmed me opening them last night. Let me know what you guys think, I'll put up more video clips later tonight. Thanks!

I saw you open it, but i still cant figure out what the heck it is?
So basically this type of toy, urban/vinyl designer market, there are manufacturers and underground artists. There are two ways, at least I can see they make these collector toys. 1) A manufacturer would make a general shape, ie Kidrobot - they made a shape they called Dunny and it's basically a toy figure made of white plastic. Then they would hire an artist to design to their own design, usually a character they created. And this will repeat like 100 times with different artists. Basically you will have 100 different designs but all in the same shape. 2) The second way, is an artist who makes their own toy in the shape of their character. Consumers are basically buying these the toys because they think they are cute or something appealed to them in it.
I'm trying to do something similar. I wanted a shape where artists and consumers can redesign on their own and I also wanted a character behind the shape. I wanted the toy to have a strong back story and a sense of meaning behind it. I didn't want a toy where people were just moved by the design. I also wanted the design on the Kugg to some type of meaning behind it, not because it just looks cool.
Kuggs is the symbol about the struggle of everyday life. It's about accepting life the way other people has forced you to take. It's about the frustration of knowing that something is better out there for you and there is nothing you can do to change your situation. It's about being trapped. It's about being faceless and having no voice. It's about being everyone that ultimately becoming no one.
Below is a description of part 1 the story that I am drawing into a comic to put on the website -
"Kuggs are cute little beings that are being oppressed. Oppressed you say? Yes - oppressed. What??? How? Why? Well, let me tell you the story, boys and girls... From the day they are born, each little Kugg is given an orange armband with a barcode to determine what their job is when they grow up. They are also stamped with an expiration "date" which is indicated by the letters PIS (Processed In System) and followed by a number (showing the productive years left to work.) So from the start, each little baby Kugg's fate has already been determined.
Once they reached to certain age, they will be forced to work in order to survive. But who forces them to work? Ahh... I forgot to mention the Kuggs are "ruled" by the "privileged" few - The Bagless. The Bagless are rich and greedy beings that provide the Kuggs with jobs to do. The Bagless pay them just enough for them to survive, therefore making certain the Kuggs can never get ahead.
Day in and day out, the Kuggs work. Day in and day out, the Bagless get richer and richer. The Kuggs, in essence, are the cogs in the machine that fuels the greed of the Bagless. And like cogs
