NASA loses contact with Mars rover
I think MHS (Martian Homeland Security) finally found Spirit and is interrogating him. First they amputated his high-gain antenna to prevent him from sending a distress call to OCS (Orbiting Command Satellite). Next MHS takes Spirit to their secret, underground laboratories to begin the delicate task of reverse engineering of his software. The beeps we are hearing are of each packet of data being downloaded from [I]Spirit
Sorry, guys, I was out shooting cans and crap, and hit what looked like a golf cart with a ricochet. Never expected to see one out here in the desert, but some NASA guys showed up all pissed and stuff, said I could have ruined the whole scam
Guess my remote desert hideaway in central Utah is no longer so lonely

While Sojourner was indeed a success for rover technology, it unfortunately provided very little scientific data. Due to its size and nature, it had only limited investigative capabilites. It had a limited range and was reliant on its lander for much of its functionality.
Spirit, on the other hand, is chock full of scientific instruments plus it's entirely self contained. It has the potential to journey much further afield than Sojourner ever did, and should be able to provide much more detail on what it finds during its journey.
Limited communications has been achieved with Spirit this morning, fortunately. http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/newsroom/pr.../20040123b.html
