Default Navy Rail Gun

US Navy has just completed a 10-megajoule test fire of their huge rail gun. For the first time ever, they fired a projectile with a velocity of 8,270 feet per second. That's an amazing 5,640 mph, and the gun is only firing at a third of its potential power. The other video shows you what the projectile looks like when loaded.

I remember in school reading bits about this and the rail guns of WW2 and the one that was being made in Iran. Going to be bad azz when they get this on ships.

I used to run computer simulations (FEM) of rail guns; the company for which I worked tested them at Green Farm test site across the freeway from Miramar Naval Air Station.

Since it has force applied to it only when being fired I don't understand how it could be effective unless shot directly at a target, like a gun. If it was fired like artillery wouldn't its speed (when coming down) be the same/very similar to that of any other projectile coming down?

Speeds vary. Some are subsonic - as low as about 600 mph - and others are supersonic. Tank cannons can fire kinetic energy (KE) rods at about 1.8 km/sec - slightly over 4,000 mph.
