I remember in school reading bits about this and the rail guns of WW2 and the one that was being made in Iran. Going to be bad azz when they get this on ships.

US Navy has just completed a 10-megajoule test fire of their huge rail gun. For the first time ever, they fired a projectile with a velocity of 8,270 feet per second. That's an amazing 5,640 mph, and the gun is only firing at a third of its potential power. The other video shows you what the projectile looks like when loaded.

Since it has force applied to it only when being fired I don't understand how it could be effective unless shot directly at a target, like a gun. If it was fired like artillery wouldn't its speed (when coming down) be the same/very similar to that of any other projectile coming down?
