Contrast. The first row has light blocks (light grey) contrasted with a darker block (A - medium dark grey). The third row, however, contrasts darker blocks (heavy gray) with a lighter block (B - medium-dark grey). Thus, B is made to look lighter and A is made to look darker. However, when you compare the blocks in the first and third rows, you'll notice that those in A are the same "color difference" from the compared blocks as those in the third row are. The blocks in row with A are, for instance, 25 shades lighter while those in row B are 25 shades darker.

It's like putting a yellow against a white, then a yellow against a orange. The yellow will look close to white when next to white (ie, fairly light), but put it against orange and it will appear very bright and yellow (ie, not even close to white).

Just how colors work, I guess - an interior designer would probably be able to explain it far better.

Hope I haven't confused anyone.

Call me dumb.. I don't get it...

Are the letters "A" and "B" supposed to be the same shade, or the SQUARES themselves?
