Need Bike Advice
OMG
I'm going to go throw up now. That redline was like $400.00 new. I wonder how much my Trickstar would be worth, it was one of the priciest bikes around when new.
Rember these? I started on one when I was 6 years old. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...7160293419&rd=1

WOW Talk about memories!! While these days I sit around the office BS-ing about sports cars and ski boats, 18 years ago it was all about Trickstars, Haros, RL's etc...
I was very brand-loyal. Growing up I always had the latest Schwinn Predator whether it was a "racing" or "freestyle" bike. They actually built them in Chicago "back-in-the-day". My dad was a "local" Schwinn guy too so I knew how to work him for a new BMX each summer.
Anybody remember PK Ripper? The was 1 Ripper in my town in the 80's...it was like the 1 Ferrari in town.
F20C1, get a Trek Mt Bike. My wife just got a decent light-duty Trek for like $350. Riding a BMX now would be very uncomfortable!

you can easily find something in your price range at a shop if you look and ask. Stay as far away from places like Walmart as you can - the bikes they stock are pretty exclusively over-priced garbage. Mongoose sells some models at Target, but you can find better bikes at most shops for under $300. Try to get a chromoly frame and fork, with 48-spoke wheels. The bikes in your price range will come with one-piece cranks, which you'll want to replace with three-piece Profiles ASAP. You only need a rear brake. Try and get an Aheadset-style stem, rather than a quill stem, but this is not critical, and you can usually later buy a fork for an Aheadset-style stem, and save money buying the frame with a quill stem fork.
Don't bother looking at mountain bikes with your budget - anything you get would be pretty crappy when compared to what $200-300 can buy in a BMX bike, IMHO. You don't need to pay for derailleurs, shifters, gear sets, etc., so most of the purchase price will be going to better components and a better frame.

I want a mountain bike with full suspension and disc brakes, but doesn't cost 700+ bucks, what would be in my range???
In June, when they notice the dust it's collecting, they sell it for close to nothing.
I bought a used Schwinn Moab back in the late-90s for like $250. This was a $1000 bike new. It barely had a spec of mud on it but seller was a 40-something guy who said the aluminum frame hurt his back. I still have it.

Why not buy a used decent mb off eBay? Something like a 5 yr old GT - I'm happy with my GT after 6 yrs of abuse.
btw, didn't Schwinn buy GT? Who owns Schwinn now?

While the name and company went corporate and lost it's shine, the brains and "legend of quality" live on at Waterford Precision Cycles just SW of Milwaukee. Rick Schwinn still hand-builds killer frames in the old Paramount shop there. It hasn't changed much since late 80's when a young rookie was fitted there for a hand-built super-frame. The Team Schwinn rookie's name was Lance Armstrong.
