Default Need to copy a dvd

I'm looking to copy a dvd and put it onto another dvd that I'm making. However, the dvd program that I have requires that the file be in .avi format. Does anyone know of a good dvd ripper that I could use to convert the file to .avi format? Anything free? Or relatively cheap?

Thanks.

- Jake

If you still have the original DVD and also have some burning software like Nero.

Use this, DVD Shrink.

Plus it is Freeware, and one of the best DVD ripping programs out there.

I have dvd x copy and dvd shrink. I think I have the xcopy gold, but my gripe is that it takes 2 dvds to copy most movies. With shrink, I can compress to fit on 1 DVD. I also did not like 10sec warning intro for every copied dvd for xcopy. However, I still keep xcopy in the event I can't copy using shrink, which I needed once in the last 100 burns

i have the platnum version, and as far as i'm aware, my dvd rips are compressed to fit onto 1 disk. yeah, the backup warning message is annoying, but i use programs called InfoEdit and VOBrator to search for and remove that message from the ripped files (i sometimes even remove the FBI warnings from the ripped files ). nonetheless, i think i will give DVD Shrink a try just to see if i like it better.

btw, are there supposed to be any degradation of video and audio qualities when the files are compressed to fit onto a dvdr??

I think what Jake means is he needs a program that converts from the format used in DVDs (VOB) to AVI format because his DVD mastering software only accepts AVI files. Programs like DVD Shrink and DVD XCopy are meant for backing up DVDs only, not for ripping certain parts and transcoding them to another format.

My recommendation would be to use SmartRipper to rip the DVD files to disk, then use FlaskMPEG to convert it to AVI. Both tools are free and available on the web, but I believe it is now illegal to download SmartRipper due to some sort of copyright act. You'll probably have to click a link saying "I do not live in the US" before you can download SmartRipper.

Yeah, I'm not looking for copying software. I already have DVDXCopy and I have DVDShrink too. What I'm looking for is a DVD program that I can use to convert the files. I'm currently using DVD Architect to create the menus/sub-menus. However, before the video can be placed into the program it requires that the program be in .avi/mpeg2 format. I'm looking to see if there's any software out there that can do the file conversion. I'm currently using ImTOO DVD (i think) and it works fine, its just slow as hell

Also, anyone know of any good DVD-creation programs? Similar to DVD Architect?

Thanks.
