Default need dog training advice.

I recently moved from an apartment to a house with a yard. While in the apartment of course the dog had to be walked to go to the bathroom. I now have a yard and he wont go to the bathroom on his own. Any suggestions on how to get him to do so? btw, he is a beagle if that helps at all.

Is he mainly an inside dog? If you leave him outside all day while you are at work, he will go.

Sometimes, dogs are funny. They will not go "potty" in their own space - which is why crate training works so well. Dogs are denning animals and won't generally mess in what they consider their den.

My dog is an inside dog and loves to be with us. If I open the door to let her out in our fenced yard, she usually just looks at us through the closed door.

Try just walking him outside without a leash and seeing if he will go. If he will, then try to gradually stay closer to the porch, making sure he goes. Gradually work up to just letting him do his thing on his own.

I'm lucky - my dog will go on command. She is a Therapy Dog that we take to hospitals and she must hold it for long periods when she is working. It is important to get her to take care of everything before she gets to the hospital.

People who run field trials with their dogs have the same issues.

Make sure you give it lots of praise when he finally starts doing what you want him to do.

Good luck.

yes mainly an inside dog. How in the hec do you get them to go on command. I usually spend 20 minutes freezing my a$$ off in the morning waiting for him to go.

Exercising the dog will help speed up the process. Try playing with him or making him run and fetch things, etc, etc. Anything at all will help. Worked for my dog!

It may take a while, but keep telling your dog to "go potty" and when he goes, keep praising him. Eventually, when you let him out and say "go potty", he'll know what to do.

There is a training tool for puppies that is like dog pee scent in a spray bottle. You spray it on the grass when you let the dog out and he will instinctually want to mark the spot. Works on both male and female dogs. I have seen dogs lick it up then mark it.

We taught our dog to go on #1 command. Like DF said, you have to repeat the "Go potty" phrase when you are out with him. If he goes without the command, say it while he is going, then praise him when he is done. He'll figure it out.

On a funny note, sometimes he tries to fake pee and then run over all happy. I send him back and does the real deal.
