Pepper spray is not an adequate self defense device. If you GF has decided that she wished to defend herself from criminals than the best device is a firearm with a trained operator.
The NRA offers personal defense/handgun instruction courses and some are taught by women.
The Police will show up in time to start the paperwork and pepper spray will only further antagonize the bad guy. Only a handgun will even up the odds if she should have the misfortune to face a criminal.
My personal preference is for a .45 cal as it has a proven record of effectiveness. Glock and Kimber Arms offer them in "purse size" for the lady on your Xmas shopping list...
