Default Need Help: Baby bird

Sunday afternoon we found 2 baby birds in our backyard. One obviously larger and older. The bigger one was able to fly a few feet at a time, the little one was just sitting motionless in a bush. The bush is maybe about 4 feet tall, what's left of a lilac we cut away when building the fence. I don't know what these birds are called, but there are quite a few of the grown ups living around the house. We left both birds alone.

This morning I checked the bush, the little guy was gone. Unfortunetly he wasn't gone, the dogs found him in the grass a few feet away. They didn't hurt him, but they scared him. He can't fly obviously so he was just hopping/running away, wings expanded, beek open, posturing and squacking. There was a number of grown up birds in the trees above, all squacking back. A few hours later the little guy was in another part of the backyard, again hiding in the grass. He startled one of the dogs and got rough housed by a curious nose. I checked again in a couple hours, couldn't find him.

This evening I wanted to confirm he's gone. I looked around every where, found him back on that lilac where I first saw him. A bunch of adults have been hanging out and squacking away all day in a tree overlooking the general area where this litte guy is hopping around. My impression is that they are watching him, perhaps still taking care of him. I know I'm not supposed to pick him up, but I don't want the little guy to die.

Should I just monitor him for now as it appears the other birds are taking care of him, or is that just my hopeful immagination? My plan would be to box him up and taking him to the humane society.

Thats a Robin. At that size, I'd just leave them alone. They will probably be alright. The adults are probably the parents since they are fussing when you're near the baby. I've got a baby robin in my back yard with noisy parents right now too, and as long as my dog doesn't get it, it'll be fine.

I have seen those baby birds twice in one week...one in front of my house and the other at a park about 20 min away from my house. Both times, the baby birds (that were pretty damn big compared to the mother birds) were waiting for their mom to feed them the bugs. But how and why they ended up in front of my house door or on a side walk in a park where people can just step on them if they are not paying attention, I have no idea! Funny thing is I watched their mom catch a bug, and feed them....but then 5 minutes later...they are gone!

Leave them alone, they'll be alright. The parents are around and feeding them. This is the time of the year that they are too big for the nest and they are learning the ways of the world, cruel as that may seem at times.

It's kinda like the Duck I had living in my yard. I was worried about them, then one day I came out and saw the eggs craked.. I thought a cat got to them, but they hatched and took off to water (I guess).

point being... leave it to nature as was intended.
