Default need help training my kitten

Last friday I found a 6 week old stray kitten and took her in. I'm trying to train her to use the litter box and I have been somewhat successfull. If I leave her enclosed in a small area around the box for some time she will use it. But if shes running loose around the house she tends to look for other places. Not once has she gone straight to the box when running loose. Luckily I have caught her searching for a spot before she did anything.Any tips on training her? After she eats or drinks I enclose her in an area around the box, but I won't always be around to place her there so I hope she learns this soon.

Thanks,
Jose

Hey I had soooo many kittens when I was little, and the best thing to do is not to let her go freely, keep her in a small area w/the litter box and she'll learn soon enough that its her "Pee Pee Pot".
But don't trap her in the area, let her out every once in a while. That should help you out a little.

Sounds like kitty doesn't like the litter. Switch if out with something all natural and unscented. I took in a stray and had the same problem until I found it stuffed into a potted plant and using that. She just didn't associate the perfumed crap with dirt. Instincts are all there. Just wants some plain old dirt. Read the box/bag....most all the stuff today has been scented.

Thanks for the replies

I'm using fresh scent litter right now, I'll give the unscented litter a try.

Make sure her food isn't near her box. Cats generally don't like to poop near the same place they eat.

What did you name her?

Her food is about 10 feet away from the box, think I should move it further away?

My dad named her Pepita. I hate that name so I call her Jezebel

From everything I've ever read & heard, the above method is NOT a good one to use.

Keep her enclosed in an area of the house. At 6 weeks old, having the whole house at her disposal is too much. Keep in mind that most kittens stay with their mothers until they're 8 weeks old. Just give her some more time. When you're in the room w/ her, pick her up, put her in the box, and gently take her paw & make a scratching motion in the litter. Do this 3 or 4 times every time you're in there. If she jumps out of the box, pick her up, put her back in, and start over. Just so she knows that she's supposed to scratch there.

Some cats are more particular than others, so moving the food further away from the litter box may be a good idea.

This may sound really dumb, but the litter box isn't too "tall" for her to jump in, right? If the sides are too high, it may be too difficult for the kitten to get in there.

I think the biggest obstacle is just her age - she's really young and probably just needs a bit more time to really understand. Like the others have said, instinct is there & will take over.

Good luck!
