Need A New Computer
Asus for motherboards - They are just simply the best.
I also like Intel but AMD give great performance for the money so Ill leave that up to you.
I being also planning to buy a new computer because mine is kind of old. PIII 500 MHZ, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB HD, 128 MB NVIDIA card, and it runs like a Honda
but its kind of outdate it.
My dream PC if money was no object is the Alienware ALX watercooled PCs, just
insane.
New Egg is the best site for parts as someone mentioned before and also Tiger Direct but I have not had any bad experiences with them yet.
Good Luck.

Definitely build it yourself!
This link is a little dated (winter of last year), but it has a good brake down of AMD's CPU's vs Intel's

Read up on the advantages between them, and then check out the prices of things at pricewatch.com .
For video cards I'd go with an ati 9800 if I was on a budget, an nvida 6800 if I was not counting the cost.
I built a "budget" gaming machine last winter, using Biostar's IDEQ small form factor cast (I like the portability for Lan parties) and an AMD 3200+ cpu (754 socket). I've been very happy with the computer. If you travel a lot with the computer (IE lan parties) consider an IDEQ or Shuttle small form factor case and motherboard. If not I'd recommend an MSI motherboard for use with an Athelon 64 bit CPU (not that you're likely to have trouble with Asus).

As an alternative you could go to Comp USA and do a BTO. You work with a Tech and you agree to all the pieces parts. If nothing else you can see what it costs to have someone put it together for you with a warrantee or a DIYS.

My comp is at least 5 years old and having issues.......
Approximate cost to build your own, gaming is not an issue, just looking for a range.
