Default Need photoshop help

Hi. Im in a compuer graphic design course for school, and were working with photoshop. Unfortunately i have no experience with it except for what i have been taught for the project were doing.

We have to take a photo, find its lines, convert to grey scale to make a pencil sketch, then back to rgb to finish it in color. my problem is we have to layer the image to get the effect of a water color paining.

all goes well at school, but the photoshop on my home computer isnt formated like the ones in school. when i got to make a new layer, the background is not white. its some kind of gray and wite checkerboard. how do i turn this function off? all i want to see is a blank layer. thanks for any help......Frank

If you want the checkerboard layer to be white, simply paint bucket the area white and switch to the layer you are manipulating.

If you were to open a NEW file, you'll see that amongst your available choices of backgrounds (in the CONTENTS section) there will be WHITE, BACKGROUND COLOR, and TRANSPARENT (checkerboard pattern)

Yes because what would be the point of of having layers otherwise?

You normally don't want an entire layer to have a coloured background because you won't see the layer beneath if you do.

If you want the new layer to have a filled background select your colour and then use the Paint Bucket tool.
