It is very unlikely that a German company would set a weight target in pounds. Also, if the car is based on the current Z3 as the article suggests, there is no way they are going to cut more than 35% from its weight. The Elise uses a bonded extruded aluminium chassis to achieve that kind of mass. I'm skeptical to say the least.

I agree with Naishou here. I doubt we are likely to see anything like what they are quoting there.....

All of a sudden BMW is interested in their cars being LIGHTER?! When, and I'm sorry to say this, Loki, the new M3 is what, 400 pounds heavier than the E36 version?

Not saying it won't happen, but it's certainly not the trend...

No worries, just get the M3 CSL... 400lbs lighter than the stock E46 M3 and can lap Nurburgring in under 8mins.

So looking at the content of your post and Gregs, the amazing feet that BMW have achieved with the CSL and the use of carbon fibre and the like is to get the E46 back down to the same weight as the E36 was keep up the good work BMW

Funny that most people mention the e36 M3 when they said the exact same thing about *THAT* model when folks were tooling around in e30 M3s (which I still love).

That said even the e36 M3 LTW could never come close to driving under the 8min barrier as the e46 M3 CSL does.
