I just had a brain fart... Some or all of this may be wrong, I'm just trying to piece it together from memory... A lot of pre-movie history was placed by Timothy Zahn and some of the other authors who wrote Star Wars novels. All the books took place after RotJ, but many of the plots tied into past history, which I assume came from Lucas.

This is probably going to be a spoiler for the 2nd film and possibly the 3rd, so don't read it if you don't want to know!

-----

The 1st Clone Wars were many, many years before even SW:tPM (I don't think Yoda was alive yet). They lasted hundreds of years, spanning many generations, and lasted so long that the Jedi who finished the war had no idea how or why it was started. It ultimately came down to being a battle between the Jedi Knights (ie Yoda) and the Sith Lords (ie Darth Sidious), and the Clones were the tools of the Sith to destroy the Jedi so that the Sith could rule the galaxy. The final result was that "all" of the Sith were destroyed (or so the Jedi thought) and the Jedi were nearly wiped out. The Jedi rebuilt their Knighthood, and were a major peacekeeping force within the Galaxy. About the time between EpII and EpIII (guessing), The Empire (Emperor Palpatine & Darth Vader) came to power and purged the Jedi ranks. The remaining Jedi who lived scattered and hid, thus you find Yoda in a swamp on Dagobah, and Obi Wan in the middle of a desert on Tatooine. Luke and Leia, the son and daugter of Anakin and Amadala, were raised by other relatives away from the influence of Darth Vader and Palpatine... which brings us into SW: A New Hope time frame. The technology to clone wasn't lost after the first clone wars, and shows up several times (once presumably in the EpII time frime, once in the Zahn books) later on...

I lot of this has probably been altered by Lucas to fit his vision for the movies, of course.

Everything aside, have you ever noticed how similar the two look? Therein lies your answer, methinks.

Hahaha!

Okay, check it, I've never heard anything about Clone Wars occurring before Yoda was around which would be ~900 years before Episode I. Anyways, here's what I know about the Clone Wars that we'll see in Episodes II and III.

Both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker fought in them.

Bail Organna was heavily involved in them and Obi-Wan assissted him for at least some of the time.

The Mandalorians (a warrior clan wearing armor that was later adopted by the bounty hunter Boba Fett) were completely destroyed by the Jedi Knights during the conflict.

The Victory-class Star Destroyer was created by a Republic engineer for use in the Clone Wars.

Heavy and exstensive damage was done to the planet Alderaan, resulting in the Alderaaneans' decision to dismantle all their weapons.

I believe there was (2) clone wars - the first being pre-Yoda or perhaps early in Yoda's Jedi Knighthood, the 2nd being in the time frame of the current movies. Like I said, I could be wrong, my "history" lessons were several years ago...

When I was in Maui a few months ago, I got a chance to hang out with Natalie Portman. She was with her parents staying at the resort I was at. I ran into her at the gym in the hotel. Very cute, very sweet, and very short. I got a chance to spend some time with her. It was cool to meet a "star" who wasnt full of herself.
