Be nice to your commuter plane captains and flight attendants
According to this new book I'm reading:
- American Eagle pilots' starting salary is $16,800
- Delta Connection's starting pay is $15,000
- Continental Express starts at $13,000
- Flight attendants start out between $15,000 and $17,000 a year.
- American Eagle pilots have been banned from welfare and food stamps applications (or else they'll be fired from American)
"Never, ever let someone fly you up in the air who's making less than the kid at Taco Bell." Says the author, and I think he's got a very valid point.

I thought this was an interesting link about pilot compensation.

Wow... is this before or after 9/11?? I always thought people aimed for being flight attendants because it paid well and afforded them the excitement of traveling everywhere on the job.

A friend of my wife is a commuter pilot. Yep, they are very under paid until they
achieve a certain number of flight hours and rank. The airlines know they are
doing them a favor by letting them pilot their aircraft with entry level experience,
so they take advantage of it and only offer poor pay.
When the pilots get enough seat time and rank, they get a big raise to about
60k then things start to click. The whole situation is very much like a medical
student becoming a intern.

Read this article and think again. They may start low, just like doctors going through residency, but they will make it up if they fly. Also, those with military training will typically start higher than those who went to civilian flight school.

The pilots I know that work for American and Delta are earning in the low $200s.
