Noob Question
external hd using USB...if you want it to run as fast as possible, absolutely not a good idea. will you necessarily notice a difference? map load times definitely... other stuff, dunno. probably a little bit.
if you're concerned about performance and playing heavy graphics and memory intensive games... why would you not just shell out for a decent SATA hd?
they aren't that expensive these days ya know.

Do you know for sure that the ones with SATA connection won't have any performance penalty?
if you don't have space in your current box to add a 2nd drive, back everything up and swap to a new one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136284
or you can always try playing your games off your external and see how bad it is.

Does your mobo support eSATA?
Asus P6T Intel X58 Chipset SLI/CrossFireX Mainboard Triple-Channel DDR3/1600 SATA RAID w/ eSATA,GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394a,&7.1Audio
I think it does support it.
