The Mayans were advanced mathemeticians and astronomers, but not necessarily advanced in the fields that were necessary to sustain their growing civilization. They could've been affected by disease, famine/drought, etc, etc. By the way, although the civilization declined, there are still Mayan people alive today.

The Mayan calendar doesn't necessarily "end" in 2012. Their calendar is cyclical and 2012 just corresponds to the end of one cycle. IIRC, I believe we are currently in the 5th cycle of their calendar, and the world didn't end after the previous 4, so I doubt it will end after this one.
