Other uses for old CRT monitors?

Assuming the picture quality is still good, donate it to a charity. I give my old stuff to a local humane society all the time and they are more than happy to have it.

If the laptop has an integrated CD-ROM drive, then reformatting it should be easy. Most OS installation CDs will have a formatting utility. You can just reformat it as part of the OS install.

If it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, then your best bet for a total reformat is to set up the laptop/hard drive as a network share, then access it from another machine and perform the reformat/OS install from there.
