Default parasites (the real kind)

last night I read some really disturbing stuff about parasites that infest humans, and it's making me want to take some anti-parasitic medications, herbal treatments, etc. I've done a fair amount of travelling (mostly in remote parts of the Philippines) and I'm sure that I've eaten some less than clean foods. I can remember having two bouts of "food poisoning" and I'm wondering if I might've gotten a tapeworm or equivalent at the time. from my understanding, a majority of the human population has a tapeworm of some sort living in their gut, and these things can grow to several meters in length!

here is the article that got me on a Google search for more information.

here is a forum I stumbled across wherein it seems a good number of people have successfully de-wormed themselves with some of the herbal recipies listed. there's also some other interesting forums about bowel cleansings, but some of the things I've read border on "snake oil salesmen*" and the paranoid postings of hypochondriacs. but there's some other interesting stuff too that got me thinking. (one guy said that "bad emotions" could be "magnetized" (his words!) into these nodules that get caught up in the intestines, and clearing them out can help rid oneself of recurring bad memories n such! )

anyway, has anybody done any of these cleansings? atleast for reasons that make scientific sense (killing off parasites in the gut, perhaps flushing out waste products, etc.)?

anybody in a licensed medical field care to chime in?

oh yeah, you're gonna love these *N quite SFW* pictures of parasite infestations in humans.

Dude i have some NAAAASTY pics of parasite infestations (Westsidebilly can attest) on cd rom that i received when I had microbiology.
I wouldn't worry about it if i were you. You don't have any bloody diarrhea, nausea vomiting, jaundice, excruciating headaches, visible worms in your eye (loa loa), or painful swelling of any lower extremities or genitalia (wucheria bancrofti) do you????

Seriously though, if you have some symptoms and are worried you should go visit your primary care physician. If it's your bowels that you are particularly worried about they can run some labs like an ova & parasites test.

If you are infected, there are a multitude of "deworming" drugs available as well as a host of other antiparasitics that can rid you of your ailment.

Are you having any symptoms that make you worry?

no, it's all good Mindcore. I'm trying to keep from being overly paranoid, but I can remember two bouts of what I considered food poisoning when I was in the Philippines. one of them was so bad I literally lost 10% of my bodyweight and was sick for an entire week. the other was sooo bad-- I was cramped up and doubled-over for hours-- that my ears were ringing. I'm serious, they were ringing! the pain was so excrutiating that I crawled on the floor to the phone, pulled it down off the counter and was ready to call my family and say goodbye. yes, I thought I was going to die. (I can't remember why the thought of calling for medical help didn't cross my mind. I really could hardly stand, let alone think straight.)

so, since then I've wondered if some nasty parasite was lodging itself in me or something.

I wouldn't worry about it my man, you could have a variety of other diseases too but never really know it. If you are still scared go to your doc. By the way... did you check the ads at the bottom of the page (ads by google) for parasite cleanse???

Sounds to me like you just had some travelers diarrhea... nothing to worry about but like I said... if you are worried go visit your doc.
