Although I tend to favor getting rid of liabilities first, it really depends on numerous factors that only a knowledgable financial advisor looking at your particular case can help you with that decision.
Find a good, reputable advisor, it is money well spent...

certain debts are not bad. the home is one of these. a question asked of me was "can you eat the walls of your house?". they quickly followed up with the statement that "cash is king". my take on this is that in economic times such as these we are in, available cash allows us to purchase "bargains".
this advise came too late for me as i have been debt free for over a decade. i was fortunate in that i both got rid of debt and saved at the same time. but, in hindsight, i wish i had not worried about debt and saved even more at a younger age. the dollars you save at a young age are worth a whole lot more (more time to accumulate interest) than the ones you save at 60 years old.
my 2 cents worth.
