Default people who work in the HR department.

so i've always been interested in working in the HR field. i am now on a cross road in my life. do i want to pursue a career in the HR field? or just stick with what i'm doing now (i'm in the banking industry). the older i get, the more i realize, you really need to do something you love. i dont know if i'll love to be in the HR field, but it looks promising.

but i want to hear from those of your who current work in the field or have worked in the field before. what is your opinion on this matter? is the HR field thriving? good pay? job perks? anything you would've done differently? something you wish somebody would've told you when you started off?

ANY insight would be appreciate it. if you dont want to post it on a public forum, please pm me with the informations.

Sorry dude, I just put that in there so I can do the whole "quote" "end quote" thing. I'm not good with that stuff unless I put in a "placer" then edit.

Oh and BTW, I was in HR for 9 years and found there was no money in it unless you get to SVP levels. At the height of my HR career in NYC I was only making $85k (started out at $35k).

I'm now in Project Management and enjoy it MUCH more. There is plenty more opportunity to move up and make great $$$. I find that I have to employ alot of my HR knowledge in PM.

Because we always think that the grass is greener on the other side.

Honestly though, if you REALLY have an insatiable interest in HR, then maybe you should go for it. Just know that the options available are limited and the pay is on the low end.

As the saying goes, if you LOVE what you do, success will follow. I loved it, success came, but the dollar to hours ratio just didn't cut it for me.

im not sure how you come up with working in the HR dept. would be something that you'd enjoy but you should find out yourself. Contact a temp agency and you can work for 2-3 months.

If you are looking for a thriving job, i'd say HR isnt the best choice unless you work for a small company which requires more responsibilities.

my mom is the director of HR at a hospital now...she hates it. not to say she hasnt liked some of her past HR jobs...she focuses on comp and benefits. i think, like most jobs, it depends on the company and atmosphere

Several years ago Road & Track had a photograph in its "PS". On the near side of the backyard fence sat two Volkswagon Beetles. On the far side of the backyard fence sat two gullwing Mercedes Benzes.

The caption read, "Sometimes the grass IS greener on the other side of the fence."
