Thumbs up To pickup/hold or not to pickup/hold?

My son will be 2-month old next Monday Lately he's been a little more fussy than usual, and despite my wife and I trying different formulas (lactose free & soy), mylicon (for gas), and massage, the baby won't fall asleep unless we're holding him, and if we drop him onto his crib before he's in deep sleep, he'll wake up and fuss/cry.

Our nurse told us to let him cry himself to sleep.

My mother said it's better to let him cry for a little, and if things don't improve, pick him up and cuddle.

My other friends with multiple kids said to pick him up as soon as he fusses so he doesn't feel scared or alone.

What's your suggestion?

At his age you might as well just pick him up. If he was older then I'd say let him cry a little. But 2 months old he isn't ready to adapt to being alone yet.

It is important to let them cry as it promotes healthy lung development. Only be concerned if they are running a fever or not properly digesting food.

We tried this method. Let them cry for 5 minutes, go in a comfort them for a few minutes but do not talk to him or pick him up, just rub his head or back. Leave the room for 7 minutes, if they keep crying go back in to comfort him. Keep increasing the time you are away and he'll fall asleep. Try that for a few nights and i'll guarantee it works. They need to learn to get themselves to sleep. Some use crying, some sing or talk themselves to sleep. Ours used to sing. You're asking for trouble by putting him to sleep in your arms. They'll demand that. He's training you. He needs to train himself. Our daughter had some rough nights but the kid is a true sleeper now. I put her in her crib, she rolls over and goes to bed without a peep.

yeah little kids are testing the waters when they cry like that. I think ^^^ that is one of the best ideas I've ever seen.

At two months they are still more animal than person; pick him up.

We used a method very similar to Ubetit's, and it worked great. Our girl is now almost 3 and has always slept well since. Good luck,

So maybe I should try Ubetit's methods AFTER the baby is ~6 months old?

We figured out that last night he was crying his lungs out because we didn't give him his pacifier (left it on the car and forgot)

Yeah, he'll be 2 months old next Monday, so I guess he's still too young to be "testing" the parents, right?
