As far as I know, it IS called Kobe (as in Kobe Steel from Kobe, Japan). I never heard of kalbi.

Oh and isn't the beef called 'kalbi' not 'kobe'?
Your confusing Korean BBQ ribs (Kalbi) with Japanese cows, best known for their steaks (Kobe). As stated before, Kobe is a province in Japan where these cows are raised. They are pampered beyond belief and fed a strict diet including beer. Kalbi is also yummy, but no where near the caliber of Kobe Beef. And no flaming from Koreans as I'm 1/2 Korean and 1/2 Japanese so I am indeed impartial

I guess it depends on where you eat... I was near Kobe for Shabu Shabu, and the price wasn't too bad. (it was free for me!)

Andronico carries "Kobe" style beef which is good, but since its grown in the US, its no were near the same quality. I usually buy their dry aged filet. Yummy. From what a buddy of mine tells me, there is a market in Oakland that gets some real Kobe meat every once in a while.

I work at the steakhouse in Bellagio. We get domesticated Kobe in like a few times a month. I must say, for $125, the 12oz is rather disappointing! I have yet to try the "real" kobe, I'm sure it really melts in your mouth!
