I just built a house and the builder was throwing in 42 inch plasma's as a promotion. It is a current model (don't know the number here at work) LG that goes for about $3200 at Best Buy. Picture is fantastic.

Pioneer makes the best IMHO if you want to spend $5000+.

There are models out there for ~$2000 and I would shy away from those. You get what you pay for.

I would go into a store and compare pictures side by side and see what you like that is in your price range. Seeing them side by side is the only way to tell which has the best picture. There were a couple nice models at Best Buy but I was lucky that I liked the freebie I was getting the best. I thought the free tv was going to be a crappy model but that LG is a really nice set. Brightness and clarity is top notch.

There are good pictures put out by some of the Phillips and Samsung and a couple other brands but I can't remember which ones I liked. My LG also had zero "dead pixels". That can be a concern with plasma display quality control.

I bought a Panasonic 42 inch ED plasma (42PD50U) for about $1900. ten months ago. The only regret I have is I didn't a 50 incher but budget did not allow for it. With current 50 inch plasma prices I would get it without hesitation.

Within the 42 inch category, the biggest decision is whether to get a ED or HD plasma. The only way to determine that is with your own eyes at a store. My eyes couldn't tell the difference so I went with the ED. The same 42 inch HD model will probably cost anywhere from 500-800 dollars more.

I bought from a local box retailer who had prices as good as online stores, without the hassle of shipping.

I got the Panasonic 42" HDTV plasma from Costco and it's been excellent as well. Absolutely great value for the price. At the time, it was for sale around $2k and I got an extra $200 off as part of some new member promotion. If it weren't for that promotion, I probably would've gone for the EDTV version instead.

Panny's are widely regarded as the best. Even better if you can get the commercial versions. I'd stay away from LG.

I agree about the Panny comment... and for those that like a bunch more info...

The forum sponsors at the top ( Visual Apex and Plasma Concepts) are both highly regarded. I got my 42" Commercial Panny from VA.

BTW, most stores are lousy places to view a good flat panel.

I just picked up a 42" Panasonic plasma HDTV for my new house and it's pretty awesome! Discovery HD is my new favorite channel to just stare at all the vibrant colors

Pioneer 4350 here.
Pioneers are pricey, but costs have gone down significantly lately. I saw a Pioneer Elite 43 inch for only $3999 today at best buy.
