PLEASE HELP: Highly threatening phone call
Everyone is very on point with their ideas, but go and get some protection for your wife, maybe something semi-passive like pepper spray. There is a very high concentrated one on the market right now cause my sister carries that with her. I wouldn't suggest having a gun in the house unless your wife can handle one very well, but there is also your child and the fear that a weapon can also be turned on you in a struggle. The pepper spray should give enough aasistance for your wife while at a safe distance from the a$$hole. Be careful and don't be too on guard or you'll just wear yourself out.
Looks like a prank call, did you press *69 when you hung up??.. The last name that was given is pretty generic so it's probably phony.. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if it makes you feel safer, get an alarm system or something of that nature installed..
1.) Get a house alarm (if you don't have one already).
2.) Get caller ID (if you don't have it already).
3.) Use call-block (to keep out callers who block their info from coming up on a caller ID).
4.) Change the phone number (unless it'll be a huge hassle).
5.) Don't have your wife's name listed in the phone book.
6.) Get a dog. Sounds dumb, but there was this criminal in Fort Lauderdale who targetted million dollar mansions and when he was finally caught, he said that he avoided any house that had a dog.
I'm sure it was just a stupid prank by kids w/ nothing better to do. But better to be safe than sorry. Good luck w/ everything.

i read in the phone book that if you dial * something (forgot what it is) you can initiate a trace, and the police and know where it was coming from...
What is worse, someone doing this to you, or the fact that the cops don't care....

Thanks for the input guys.
With regard to arming myself or my wife - I do not think that is feasible. First of all, we have never had any exposure to firearms and the thought of having a gun with a baby is just unacceptable. Plus there is also the added issue of the weapon being turned against you.
Even though I had an opportunity to cool down overnight, I am still very perturbed. The tone and demeanour of the person on the phone was extremely aggressive. I do not understand how a prank caller would adopt such a sociopathic tone.
The police seemed to indicate that since it was only one call - it was probably not a serious problem. My problem with this theory is - what if this guy decides not to call again. What if he just decides to break in or something like that? Why cannot just having one call with such a serious and aggressive threat be considered significant enough?
I called the phone company - and they said that they had no way of figuring out where the call came from. I am really surprised by this - I thought phone records were routinely accessed by law enforcement for tracking purposes.
Ofcourse I am going to get caller ID etc. But I am still VERY unnerved.

You have a valid reason to be cautious.
Prank or not, I would not let my guard down if I were you.
Get extra locks (dead bolts) for your front and back doors. Re-inforce your window locks.
Get an alarm and leave it 'on' even during the daytime. Fix it in a way that the only way to open the door is for your wife to punch in a code before she lets anyone in.
*Most importantly, keep the communication lines between you and your wife open at all times. Have her call you at certain times of the day or call her at those agreed times. If she misses a call at a certain time, then there's something wrong.
