Default Police need to chill out

I thought this was crazy! I would have to be killed before anyone crushes my car.

I think that it's perfectly appropriate. They did the right thing. An example must be set, and someone must take the consequences for their actions. Don't like it, just take it to the track. Too many innocent lives have been lost due to street racing, it's not worth it for that brief moment of fame.

PS. IBTL!

Court order is required to crush a car, and only if it has stolen parts on it. If your seats were stolen for example, would you even think twice about crushing the thiefs car?

I don't feel like reading the story, but here is my feeling...

Street racing is NOT that serious. We have like... um... a whole forum for it? 99.9% of street races end just fine. Of couse there are always idiots who will always push it too far, get into trouble, and hurt others. I can think of ways this applies to guns, alcohol, and about 100 other legal things in society.

The bottom line is that if you hurt someone street racing, you should suffer severe consequences. If you are racing and nothing happens, it should be a speeding ticket. Same concept I believe with cell phones- cause an accident on the phone, get in trouble. Talk on the phone all you want, just own up to the weight of your actions when something goes wrong.

There are things that are known to be of significantly greater risk and proactive measures should be taken to minimize such risks. Street racing places a much greater risk on the safety and wellbeing of the participants AND OF THE SURROUNDING PUBLIC. Holding street racing as an illegal activity and enforcement is the proactive measure.

Let me ask you this. A streetracer kills one of your relatives, are you going to be satisfied with him/her "owning up to the weight of [his/her] actions?" I'm willing to be you'd prefer that the race never took place.

How about we look at it from a different approach. Street racing on public roads exists. People have been killed as a result of accidents related to street racing. The article claims that police efforts to reduce street racing (some where in CA, anyway) have also reduced the rate of street racing related deaths. I would imagine there is some data to back that up. If there is, then I would suggest that continuing to crack down on street racing serves society better then letting the notion of "owning up to the weight of one's actions" be the only deterrent from people "pushing it too far."

I"m not saying I agree completely with what the article is about. Quite frankly, the article left me with many unanswered questions. However, I do believe racing on public roads is and should be illegal, as it's what's best for the safety and wellbeing of the general public (of which I am a part). What's so hard about taking it to the track?

^^ CivicSi, the question isn't whether or not it should be illegal. The question is how serious the consequences. Speeding should also be illegal, but I'm sure you've done it a few times before... and I'm sure if you look at statistics, most people who cause fatal accidents were above the speed limit.

I guess I'm just trying to be realistic. I race on open freeways at 1 in the morning and don't feel guilty, because I'm either going to cause injury to myself or some property damange, in the total worst case. Street racing on surface streets with homes/cars/people around isn't something I'd ever do. I just hate the reaction some people have to the term "street racing", when they think people should be locked up for life just for thinking about it. It's all in terms of where/when/how you do it.

Or course, if a family member was injured/killed by a racer, I'd wish it never took place. But if the racer was doing something to make that scenerio possible, he obviously wasn't taking place in the type of race most of the people on this forum probably participate in.

What if there isn't a track around? Then what is a person to do?

Drag race in Orlando ends with 2 deaths

I'm glad the driver of the minivan is dead, he deserved what he got. The arrested boy, I hope he faces a minimum of 2 life sentences for causing the wreck and the deaths of 2 people.

Focking idiots street racing in a neighborhood.
